Bad actors have grown a thriving trade in all kinds of illicit commodities and services, including hacking as well as buying and selling things like illegal drugs, weapons, passwords, data and stolen identities

One of the most prevalent types of illegal goods sold on the dark web is drugs and substances. These can range from recreational drugs like marijuana, cocaine, and ecstasy to more dangerous and addictive substances like heroin, fentanyl, and opioids. Vendors often use cryptic language and coded descriptions to advertise their products, making it challenging for law enforcement to track them down.

Weapons and Ammunition

Another concerning category of goods sold on the dark web is weapons and ammunition. This can include firearms, explosives, and other dangerous weapons. Some marketplaces even offer custom-made weapons or modifications to existing firearms.

Stolen and Fraudulent Goods

The dark web is also a hub for stolen and fraudulent goods, including:

1. Stolen credit card information: Criminals sell stolen credit card numbers, expiration dates, and security codes, which can be used for fraudulent transactions.
2. Fake identification documents: Vendors offer fake IDs, passports, and driver’s licenses, which can be used for illegal activities or identity theft.
3. Counterfeit goods: Counterfeit products, such as luxury watches, handbags, and clothing, are sold at discounted prices.

   For instance, the owner of the Incognito Market, an online dark web narcotics marketplace, was arrested in May 2024 for allegedly enabling the sale of over $100 million in narcotics, including deadly fentanyl 29. This operation was a collaborative effort involving Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York and other law enforcement partners. Similarly, Operation Dark HunTor led to 150 arrests across eight countries and the seizure of over 230 kilograms of drugs and $31.6 million in cash and cryptocurrency in November 2017

Some marketplaces on the dark web offer illegal services, including:

1. Hitmen and assassins: Criminals claim to offer hitman services, where they will harm or kill individuals for a fee.
2. Fraudulent services: Vendors offer services like fake insurance claims, tax fraud, or other financial scams.
3. Illegal gambling: Illegal gambling operations are hosted on the dark web, allowing users to place bets on sports, casino games, or other events.
